Science

The Department of Fundamental General Scientific Disciplines is the basic structural element of the medical faculty of Kharkiv International Medical University.

The main mission of the department is to provide fundamental training for future doctors in the block of basic biomedical disciplines, formation of students’ general and special competencies in accordance with international standards of medical education, as well as development of professional responsibility and research-oriented clinical thinking of medical professionals through the implementation of educational and methodological, research, organizational and educational work.

The department has a strong research and teaching staff. At the moment, the department has 18 lecturers – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor D. Shyіan; Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor N. Kabus; Ph.D in Medicine, Associate Professors V. Erokhina, T. Merkulova, I. Ladnaia; Ph.D in Biology, Associate Professors T. Deieva, I. Musatova, S. Nakonechna, O. Pakhomov, L. Tynynyka; PhD in Technology, Associate Professor Younis Basheer; MD, assistants Dahe Ehab Nafa, S. Topchii, Udoh Andikan Effiong, Zakaria Maher; biologist, assistant, researcher A. Leonchenko-Ulgen; biochemist, assistant O. Chumak .

The leading activity of the department is educational and methodical work, which is carried out through teaching of such academic disciplines as “Anatomy”, “Biological and Bioorganic Chemistry”, “Hygiene and Ecology”, “Histology, Cytology and Embryology", "General Surgery", "Medical Biology " Medical and Biological Physics”, “Medical Informatics”, “Medical Chemistry”, “Microbiology, Virology and Immunology”, “Physiology” in the training of higher education students in the specialty 222 “Medicine”.

The teaching staff of the department is a team of specialists with a high level of theoretical and practical training in various fields of biomedical sciences. The department is proud of scientific achievements of its teachers, who are the authors of many monographs, textbooks, workbooks, atlas of histology, patents, articles indexed in international scientific databases Scopus and Web of Science.

Lecturers of the department are constantly working to improve their professional competence, have internships at leading universities of Ukraine (Kharkiv National Medical University, National Academy of Pharmacy of Ukraine, Kharkiv National University of Pharmacy, V. Karazin Kharkiv National University) and all over the world (USA, Bulgaria, Denmark, Poland, France, Nigeria and others).

Teachers of the department also participate in international scientific forums, congresses, are leaders and participants of grant projects (in particular, “Adverse population” of cells in endocrine glands and their transplantation to animals with hormonal insufficiency”, “Study of the effect of steroidogenic and germ cells transplantation and application of traditional pharmacological preparations of substitutive therapy in various models of experimental hypogonadism”, “Study of morphological and functional properties of spheroid structures of the adrenal glands and testes in vitro and when transplanted into mice after the cadmium chloride-induced injury”, “Scientific and expert assessment of the state and value of genetic resources and preparation of recommendations for creating a regulatory system at the national and regional level of conservation, restoration, sustainable use, access to genetic resources and the distribution of benefits from their use”, “Neuroprotective potential of cryopreserved placental MSCs, extract, serum of placental blood in spinal cord injuries” etc.).

Most teachers are members of All-Ukrainian and International professional associations, in particular, members of the Department of UNESCO at the The Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ukrainian Biochemical Society, Scientific Society of Anatomists, Histologists, Embryologists, Physiologists, Topographers of Ukraine. Ph.D in Medicine, Associate Professor of the Department of Fundamental General Scientific Disciplines T. Merkulova is a researcher, head of the Department of Hygiene of School Children and Adolescents as well as a member of the Academic Council of State Institution “Institute for Children and Adolescents Health Care at the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”.

Currently, the staff of the department is working on the development of the scientific topic “Innovations in biomedical sciences and ways of improving of future doctors’ fundamental training”.

The curricula of biomedical disciplines is constantly updated taking into account the latest scientific advances in medicine, innovative research methods, new advances in understanding the mechanisms of pathogenesis of diseases studied in clinical disciplines.

Thus, in particular, taking into account the latest advances in medicine, the program of the discipline "Histology, Cytology and Embryology" includes consideration of the following issues: 1) Hormones of hunger and obesity. Development and prevention of insulin resistance of type 2 diabetes. Treatment of obesity (topic “Endocrine system”); 2) Stem cells and their use in medicine. Treatment of Parkinson’s disease with stem cells (topic “Connective tissue”); 3) Bionic eye with high resolution (theme “Sensory system”); 4) Implants and prostheses that mimic biological functions (topic “Nervous system”); 5) Regeneration of teeth (topic: “Digestive system”); 6) Technologies of heart regeneration (topic “Cardiovascular system”); 7) COVID-19 and endothelium. Mechanism of interaction and consequences (topic “Cardiovascular system”); 8) New technologies for tissue preservation. Controlled hypothermia (topic “Cytology, histological technique”).

During the teaching of academic disciplines along with the classical methods interactive problem-based teaching methods are actively used. They are such methods as case study, making a diagnosis by developing a comprehensive algorithm for studying functional and morphological disorders while working with a specific clinical case or through demonstration on experimental, virtual models; use of multimedia technologies (presentations for lectures and practical classes, training videos); practical methods (work in anatomical museum, work with plastinated cadaver, simulators, an interactive 3D anatomical training complex "Pirogov", which allows to study the systems and organs of the human body from all angles – both healthy and affected by various pathologies, building a full cycle of training – from visual acquaintance with anatomical material by layers and systems, illustrations of rare anatomical cases, receiving textual information – till checking the quality of students’ knowledge and automatic checking the results). Also these methods are solving situational problems of the “Step-1” and “IFOM” format using interactive teaching methods; preparing by students of presentations of educational material on the topics of classes; organization of competitions, thematic Olympiads, scientific and cognitive conferences on the discipline.

The latest achievements of biomedical sciences and scientific research of teachers are the basis for scientific research of students. Students participate in research through the activities of the student scientific society. Under the guidance of teachers, students take an active part in regional, national and international scientific conferences and workshops, competitions, round tables on topical issues of biomedical sciences.

Educational work with students is carried out through curatorial hours, participation of teachers of the department in the organization of university events, thematic holidays, competitions, festivals, open days at the university and more.

The teaching staff of the department makes every effort to ensure that students are interested in studying, have a high quality of knowledge, research-oriented clinical thinking, aware of the professional responsibility of the doctor and become true professionals in the field of medicine in the future.

The description of academic disciplines is provided in the information-methodical package of the department.
